Well, I'm not in uniform here, but this was our ladies' quartet playing out in the church lobby before the Christmas Eve service a few years ago- BTW, that's me on tuba....lol! http://youtu.be/WgvjCTCKSao |

RE: The Soul Connection
Way to go Annie -- you rock that tuba!! That is so cool -- how did you decide to start playing that particular instrument?

How did you choose the tuba, not an easy instrument to play. You however have it down. I was wise enough to never grow up while fooling most people into believing I had. -Margaret Mead |

RE: The Soul Connection
Well, I had never played any kind of brass instrument before I joined the church at 15- I played piano, and violin in the high school orchestra. But after I joined the church, I was asked if I wanted to learn an instrument, and I said yes- trombone. So trombone was my instrument of choice, and I played it for over 25 years- tenor AND bass. Then in '95, I was off for 11 weeks with a broken leg, and when I was able to come back, the bandmaster asked if I wanted to switch to baritone, which is a valve instrument just a bit smaller than the one played by the lady beside me in the video. I had to learn how to play a valve instrument, but I learned and I played baritone for about 4 years. Then I was asked if I would consider moving to tuba (we do a lot of switching around of parts in the band) because they needed someone who could really hold their own on the bass part. So I said sure- took me a couple weeks to really get the hang of it, but I've been playing it now for 11 years, and it gives me a kind of status- not a lot of ladies play the tuba. So there I am. Another part of the story unfolds...lol.
