The Morning After Thread, Season 9 Finale - 5/27/10
Well, what did everyone think? The show, the 2.3 second of Taylor, the results.

It was an odd show for me. More than any other finale, I completely forgot there were still results to get to. I think this finale had the least focus on the two finalist than any I have watched. Of course Lee and Crystal had the great misfortune of being the finalists in the year Simon decided to leave. But that aside, it really didn't seem all that focused on them.

As has become tradition, Idol dusted off some rarely seen acts. Some were good, some not so good. Did it bother anyone else that Mike was singing "Takin' in to the Streets" with Michael McDonald and Lee and Crystal sang with Joe Cocker? I can't tell you how many tweets showed up on twitter saying Taylor nailed TITTS in Season 5. It was nice to see and they were right. And does anyone remember Taylor saying during his audition "I don't think some of these people know who Joe Cocker is"? Yup.

As far as Lee and Crystal, Crystal seemed to be there to have a good time and seemed loose and in good voice. Lee seemed . . . completely out of it. He was just on cruise control when singing with Joe Cocker and completely missed his cue to sing. Chris Sligh tweeted last night that he thought Lee was stoned. While I think Chris Sligh is a total douche, I totally buy that assessment!

Simon got what he wanted - someone they think is radio friendly, someone they think they can mold. Good luck Lee, you're going to need it. And Crystal will get signed no doubt. How I wish Modern Whomp could sign her - Taylor said last night that he wanted her to win. But we know she will go where the big money is.

Can't wait to hear what everyone thought about the last night of the Simon Cowell era.

RE: The Morning After Thread, Season 9 Finale - 5/27/10
"Anticlimactic" was the best word I could come up with to describe it. After the judges told Lee the previous night that he was "off the melody in several places but that doesn't matter", I knew the nail was in the coffin. So, like you, I totally forgot until the last several minutes that they were going to crown a winner. So I let myself go in the awful cheese fest of "70s night" -- the BeeGees, Hall and Oates, Chicago, Joe Cocker, etc. Some of those performances were in the "so bad they're good" department (Chicago) while others struck me as "wow he's still got some of it left" (Joe Cocker).

Of course the highlight for me for the whole day was Taylor -- not only the "2.3 seconds" of him on the finale, but the last two days of pictures and media of him being there. His energy clearly outshone the others, he was so twinkly and smiley I couldn't help but smile. Plus he got to meet both Michael McDonald and Joe Cocker, which must have been a personal thrill for him. He just looks so happy.

My highlights:

1) Taylor and the whole Idol medley and the fact you could actually hear Taylor's voice over the others.

2) Casey James & Bret Michaels

3) Casey dressed in a school uniform (wrong in so many ways but I liked it anyway) It is the stuff fan fic is made of .......666

4) Chicago (old but still a love of mine)

5) Joe Cocker (and the fact Taylor got to meet him)

6) Lee "what would you do if I sang out of key?" Make you the American Idol apparently.

I found it sad that Hall of Hall n Oats has lost his voice. Awful!! I find it sad that Michael McDonald has lost his too. More awful. I just kept thinking how Taylor did that song better than anyone including McDonald.
I have never been able to watch Joe Cocker sing. At least he still sounds ok.

I LOL that Alice Cooper looked like 'Alice Cooper' again instead of the old hag he always looks like on the golf course.

Bret Michaels kind of took my breath away! He did not look like a man who recently nearly died twice. Wowza!

Janet Jackson sounded too much like Michael. If I closed my eyes I swear it was him. Kind of creepy. Then after she 'changed' and was dancing I expected a boob to flop out!

Taylor looked SOOOO YUMMY!!! OMFG!! *sigh*

Lee's win reminded me so much of Taylor's. The whole bending over like he's about to pass out. Trying to breathe. The stunned look. Then thanking the fans. It took me back. And I don't think Lee was stoned. lol! I felt like he just wanted it so bad and was so scared he couldn't breathe. JMO

I thought Michael McDonald sounded ok. Big Mike sucked singing TITTS. Joe Cocker can still belt it, but he has lost a bit too. But they are both icons and I was happy to see them and hear them.

Chicago made me cry and sing at the top of my lungs. This was my Daddy's favorite band and I can remember all the times he played their albums and we would all sing and dance around the house. LOVE THEM! The singer (blonde one) definitely can't hit those high notes anymore like he used to.

The Bee Gees looked so lost without their brother. Now that was sad to see, but they sounded great.

All-in-all, for being around for so long and not having the voices they used to, I think it was pretty good.

Janet...eh...never went overboard on her anyway.

The Bee Gee's .... love them. And it is always so sad the see only two. But they done good. And that song "How Deep Is Your Love" is one of my faves of theirs and I was singing it right along with them!

Many know here I have not watched this season at all. But last night I was able to listen / watch as I worked from the hotel.

I was completely shocked at how the Finale was totally focused on Simon's departure. IMO the finale did not focus on the two people that should have had the spotlight - as well as giving credit to those that took the journey this season.

Please don't misunderstand me -- I watched & liked the tribute to Simon but 90% of the finale was dedicated to him and it wasn't a true season finale IMO. Maybe they could have sprinkled the tributes to Simon into the past few weeks and had one finale segment where previous idols came back in this finale to pay respect/perform. ( Just a thought..)

Even if I didn't watch this season - I did see some AI clips on yahoo and the show last night showed some clips as well. Personally I think Lee sings off key so I was shocked that he won.

I really don't mean to offend any Lee fans. I just have a hard time reconciling that this season's AI winner sings off key when singing live. I think it diminishes the accomplishment of the previous Idols.

Denise, I agree about Lee. None of his three performances sounded very good to me. I was afraid to admit it. But I'll stand behind you. Smile
